The best cities for single women

The best cities for single women

Where to build a big single life, according to the data.

Every so often a woman in this club says the quiet thing out loud: "Nothing is keeping me here." No husband's job. No kids' school district. Just a lease, a zip code, and habit. If that's you, this one's for you, because it turns out researchers have spent years measuring exactly which American cities treat a woman on her own the best. We pulled the credible rankings, and here's the twist: the answer depends on which single life you're building.

Three big studies, three different questions. WalletHub's Best Cities for Women scores 182 cities on 15 measures of women's economics, health, and safety, the thrive-on-your-own list. WalletHub's separate Best Cities for Singles measures 35 indicators of social life and dating-friendliness, which for our purposes we're reading as "will I have fun and make friends there." And The Zebra's single female homeownership study ranks where a woman can actually buy the house herself. Different questions, different winners. Pick your question first.

If the question is "where do women thrive?"

WalletHub's women-focused ranking looks at median earnings, poverty rates, hospital quality, preventive care, and safety. The podium:

    Thrive winner

    1. Columbia, Maryland — The best-paid single women in America live here: the highest median wages for women in the country after adjusting for cost of living ($61,778), one of the lowest women's poverty rates, and top-ten life expectancy. It's topped this list two years running.

    2. Seattle, Washington — Strong wages, the seventh-highest share of women-owned businesses in the nation, and nearly universal health coverage for women, plus it also cracks the top three on the singles fun list. The rare city that wins both ways.

    3. Overland Park, Kansas — The sleeper pick: big-city healthcare access and economic opportunity at a Kansas cost of living, which matters enormously on one income.

If the question is "where's the fun?"

WalletHub's 2026 singles ranking scores the social infrastructure: share of single residents, restaurants and nightlife, and what a night out actually costs. We don't read it as a dating guide. We read it as a friend-making guide, because a city built for singles is a city where showing up alone is normal.

    Social winner

    1. Atlanta, Georgia — The reigning champ, where almost 70% of residents are single and the social calendar never runs dry: supper clubs, festivals, and a table-for-one culture that doesn't blink.

    2. Las Vegas, Nevada — Beyond the Strip there's a real, affordable city where entertainment is the local industry, meaning a solo night out is cheap, easy, and nobody's business but yours.

    3. Tampa, Florida — Sunshine, water, no state income tax, and one of the country's friendliest social scenes for the 40+ crowd; half of Florida seems to be starting over, so you'll be in company.

"Married couples pick cities for schools. We get to pick for joy."

If the question is "where can I buy the house?"

Single women are already out-owning single men in every major U.S. metro, and one in ten homebuyers is a single woman. The Zebra's study ranked where the keys are most reachable, weighing home values, price-to-income ratio, the gender pay gap, and how many singles live there.

    Homeowner winner

    1. Detroit, Michigan — Affordable homes, the highest percentage of singles in the country, a strong single-female homeownership rate, and a gender pay ratio of 92.4%, well above the national average. A comeback city for women staging their own.

The same study's warning label: San Jose, California ranked worst, where high housing costs and a wide pay gap put ownership furthest out of reach on one income. (California in general is the pattern: biggest dating pool in the nation, worst economics.)

    The club's top 25

Put the studies side by side and a longer list emerges. Here's our full top 25: the studied winners first, tagged by which ranking earned them the spot, then our editors' picks, the cities that keep coming up when the women of this club talk about where a big single life is easy to live. One line each on why.

    1. Columbia, Maryland — America's best-paid single women live here, with top-ten life expectancy to spend it on. (WalletHub, Best Cities for Women, #1)
    2. Seattle, Washington — The double winner: top three for both women's wellbeing and singles' social life, with the seventh-most women-owned businesses in the country. (Both WalletHub lists)
    3. Atlanta, Georgia — Almost 70% single, endless supper clubs and festivals, and a table-for-one culture that doesn't blink. (WalletHub, Best Cities for Singles, #1)
    4. Overland Park, Kansas — Big-city healthcare and pay at a Kansas cost of living, the quiet math that wins on one income. (Best Cities for Women, #3)
    5. Tampa, Florida — Sun, water, no state income tax, and a social scene full of women starting over. (Best Cities for Singles, #3)
    6. Las Vegas, Nevada — Entertainment is the local industry, so a solo night out is cheap, easy, and unremarkable. (Best Cities for Singles, #2)
    7. Detroit, Michigan — The best city in America for a single woman to buy her own house, with a 92.4% gender pay ratio. (The Zebra, #1 for single female homeowners)
    8. Denver, Colorado — Consistently top-ranked for active singles: trails on Saturday, breweries after, and clubs for everything. (WalletHub singles top 10)
    9. Austin, Texas — Sixth-best for singles in 2026, with live music as the default social plan and no state income tax. (Best Cities for Singles, #6)
    10. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — Top-five singles city money can actually afford: real neighborhoods, real culture, reasonable rent. (WalletHub singles top 10)
    11. Madison, Wisconsin — A lakes-and-libraries college town where a woman alone at a fish fry is just Tuesday. (WalletHub singles top 10)
    12. Portland, Oregon — Bookstores, food carts, and a culture built around doing your own thing publicly. (WalletHub singles top 10)
    13. Cincinnati, Ohio — A top-ten singles city where a whole downtown evening costs what one cocktail does on the coasts. (WalletHub singles top 10)
    14. Boston, Massachusetts — The anchor city of the state that tops multiple best-state-for-women rankings, dense with walkable neighborhoods and lecture-hall social life. (WalletHub state rankings)
    15. Minneapolis, Minnesota — Editor's pick: a book-club-per-block city with strong wages for women and a deep culture of showing up for your neighbors, even in January.
    16. Raleigh, North Carolina — Editor's pick: new-arrival capital of the South, where everyone's from somewhere else and looking to make friends too.
    17. St. Petersburg, Florida — Editor's pick: Tampa's artsier sister across the bay, with a waterfront, a murals district, and a big 40+ transplant scene.
    18. Chicago, Illinois — Editor's pick: world-class everything at Midwest prices, and a lakefront made for the solo morning walk.
    19. Savannah, Georgia — Editor's pick: the city where dinner alone at the bar is a local sport, wrapped in squares, porches, and gossip.
    20. Santa Fe, New Mexico — Editor's pick: an art town with a long tradition of women who came alone and stayed on purpose, O'Keeffe being exhibit A.
    21. Scottsdale, Arizona — Editor's pick: desert hiking, spa culture, and one of the most active 40+ social-club scenes in the country.
    22. Asheville, North Carolina — Editor's pick: mountains, makers, and a small-city warmth where regulars get known by name fast.
    23. San Diego, California — Editor's pick: the softest weather in America and a beach-walk culture that makes solo the default; budget for the rent.
    24. Nashville, Tennessee — Editor's pick: live music seven nights a week means there's always somewhere to go alone, and no state income tax on what you earn.
    25. Sarasota, Florida — Editor's pick: Gulf beaches, an outsized arts scene, and a town practically organized around women in their second act.

    How to actually use this

Don't move for a ranking. Move for your question. If your forties and fifties are about building wealth and staying healthy, the Columbia/Seattle/Overland Park list is your shortlist. If they're about a bigger social life, look at Atlanta and Tampa. If the dream is your name alone on a deed, Detroit's math is hard to argue with.

And before any moving truck: visit alone, on an ordinary weekend, and do ordinary things. Eat dinner at the bar. Walk the neighborhood at 9pm. Check the drive to the nearest good hospital. A city that feels good to you alone on a random Tuesday is a city you can live in.

Or stay exactly where you are, with better intel about why. That counts too. The club meets on Zoom either way.
